USE YOUR MEMORY TO ENRICH YOUR LIFE
Have you ever felt getting uptight and upset when you’re caught
up in your thinking? The more engaged you become in the details
of the thought that is upsetting you, the worse you feel. One
thought leads to another until at some point, you become
extremely agitated.
Our memory has incredible power. If you sit around and start
thinking about a sad event in your life, pretty soon you’ll
begin to feel the same negative emotions all over again, even
though it happened several years ago. On the other hand, if you
think about a tender moment with your child, or a special favor
bestowed upon you, that memory will bring a smile to your face.
What made you sad? Wrong memories. What made you happy? Right
memories.
Friend, there’s power in remembering the things that glorifies
God in our lives. There’s not one place in the scriptures where
it tells us to remember our pain, our disappointments and our
failures. It is contrary to God’s nature. We’re told to
remember the great things God has done in our lives.
The Bible clearly tells us there are certain things we ought to
forget but there are also some things we’re supposed to
remember. If we use our memory for the right purposes it will
create hope, faith and future victories.
Ps. 77:11 teaches us to recall the many miracles God has done
for us. We’re to think about His goodness constantly. Our
problem is that we’re remembering what we should be forgetting –
our disappointments, our hurts and our failures. We need to
make conscience decision everyday, all the time, to remember –
our victories and the times God has brought us through.
It’s interesting how God commanded the Israelites to remember
and celebrate what He has done in their lives. They built
memorial stones for specific victories in their lives to remind
them of God’s Hand upon their lives. Let me ask you a question,
“Are you taking time to remember your victories? Are you taking
time to celebrate what God has ALREADY done?” What are you
remembering?
One way to build your faith and hope for the future is to
remember the things God has already done in your life.
It’s hard to go around complaining when you’re always thinking
how good God’s been to you. It’s hard to go off into unbelief
when you’re always talking about the blessings and favor of God
in your life!
Remember the time when God brought you through an impossible
situation. Remember the time, when God healed a loved one from
a dreadful disease. Remember the time, when God brought you a
beautiful wife or a husband. Remember the times when your
children were born. When you focus on the goodness of God,
you’ll have a new attitude. It will release faith and hope and
propel you to a brighter future.
Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are
noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure,
whatever things are lovely, whatever things are good report, if
there is any virtue and if there is anything praise worthy—meditate
on these things. Philippians 4:8 |
